THOMAS GODDARD
Thomas B. Goddard Jr., much to the amazement of those who knew him, always to seemed to find the positive in everything.
Mr. Goddard, they say, saw a bad day or circumstance as an opportunity to focus on the good.
Alisa Lynn Goddard, his wife of 11 years, recalled his motto: A person can do anything for a day. He was fond of saying "one day at a time. That's all we've got to do," she said.
"Until the day he drew his last breath, he was making people laugh and was positive," Mrs. Goddard said. "He was the most positive person you'd ever want to be around."
Mr. Goddard of Monroe died Sunday of complications from a cancerous brain tumor. He was 64.
Mrs. Goddard said her husband underwent both traditional and experimental treatments in hopes of ridding his body of the fast-growing tumor. He managed to live longer than doctors predicted when he was first diagnosed in March 2006, a feat she credits to his religious faith, positive attitude and history as an avid runner.
"He fought the good fight just like an athlete would," she said.
Mr. Goddard was a retired educator, having served as a history teacher, athletic coach, principal and administrator. He worked in school systems in DeKalb, Gwinnett and, most recently, Walton counties. He closed his career as Walton's transportation director.
Mrs. Goddard said her husband's heart was in the classroom. As an elementary school principal, he made it a point to take personal interest in his students, especially those from economically poor backgrounds.
"There are people walking around so changed today after having had Tom as a teacher, principal and coach," Mrs. Goddard said.
He also ran marathons and volunteered with the American Red Cross and the Boys and Girls Club. Born in Fort Sill, Okla., Mr. Goddard spent his childhood in Decatur's East Lake area and graduated from Decatur High, where he played football.
He earned an undergraduate degree in education from Georgia Southern University, a master's of business administration at West Georgia College and a specialist degree from Jacksonville State University.
Dr. Art Blake remembers his friend of nearly 60 years for his perseverance and persistence.
Mr. Goddard's spiritual growth had a positive influence on his own, Dr. Blake said.
"To me," he said, "that was the greatest contribution he made to our friendship."
Other survivors include daughters, Kellie Marie Goddard Stenzinger of Walhalla, S.C., Christie Leigh Gerdes of Griffin, and Alexis Brooke Goddard of Monroe; stepfather, Hershel Johnson of Stockbridge; sisters, Sharon Rice of Monroe and Vickie Koons of Stone Mountain; and two grandchildren.

Over the years, he was a member at Trinity AME Church, Ben Hill United Methodist Church and Cascade United Methodist Church.
Calvin attended public schools in Milledgeville, Ga. and was a model student. Despite losing his father at the age of ten and coping with stammering when he spoke, he persevered and achieved academically in school. His academic ability and desire to achieve was recognized by his family, teachers and peers, and he was skipped a grade in elementary school.
In his high school yearbook, his classmates described him as determined and ambitious. A well-rounded and above-average student, Calvin played football, ran track and played in the band. After graduating as salutatorian of his class from Carver High School in Milledgeville, GA, Calvin attended Paine College in Augusta, Georgia on an academic and athletic scholarship where he excelled academically and enjoyed participating in the choir and playing football. After working diligently in a speech class his freshman year in college, he achieved his goal to overcome his stammering.
In 1958, Calvin graduated from Paine College with a Bachelor of Science Degree and taught chemistry and physics at his former high school. However, Calvin's life long quest for learning and desire to achieve fueled his desire to seek opportunities in metro Atlanta, and he was hired as a physics and chemistry teacher at South Fulton High School in East Point, Georgia.
Calvin's tenacity led him to pursue every opportunity to excel. He attended teaching training institutes in science at Yale University, Notre Dame and the University of Michigan and pursued further study at Atlanta University where he earned a Master of Education and Ed.S Degree. Enterprising and goal oriented, Calvin also obtained his real estate license and was named a "Million Dollar Agent" working part-time at Brown and Reese Realty, while continuing to teach full-time.
As an educator, Calvin was committed to excellence. He was a devoted teacher and dedicated administrator who was driven to provide the best education for students to excel. Under his leadership, M. D. Collins High School was the first school in the Fulton County School System to be selected as a state "School of Excellence." After serving over 30 years as a teacher, coach, department chair, assistant principal, and principal at South Fulton High School, Palmetto High School, M.D. High School and Banneker High School, Calvin retired from the Fulton County School System. However, he was soon asked to return to serve the students of Fulton County as an interim administrator at Tri-Cities High School, Oak Knoll Elementary School, Westlake High School and Paul D. West Middle School, which he enjoyed immensely. He also served as the interim coordinator of Social Workers for the Fulton County School System.
Calvin was married to Viola Turner for 47 years and from this happy union they were blessed with two daughters, Cheryl and Monique. JOHN VAUGHN
As a coach, teacher, counselor and administrator, John Vaughn had a strong and positive influence on thousands of students through his 30-year career in the Fulton County school system.
"John was always a caring educator," said Benny Harris of Fayetteville, a colleague. "When he was coordinator of counseling for Fulton County schools during the 1980s, he initiated a couple of groundbreaking programs --- counseling for elementary pupils and a plan to have trained specialists respond quickly and provide emotional support to pupils after a traumatic event like a shooting on school grounds or the death of a schoolmate."
"John was one of the kindest, most committed people I've known in education --- just the sort of person you'd want your son or daughter to be around," said Michael Payne of Newnan, another colleague.
The funeral for E.V. "John" Vaughn, 71, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Tyrone. He died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis on Monday at his Fairburn residence. Parrott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Betty Vaughn, his wife, explained the name by which his friends knew him this way:
"When he was 12 or so, his friends thought Eldridge was too much of a mouthful, so they called him John. The name stuck."
Early in his career, Mr. Vaughn was a popular basketball coach at Lakeshore High School in College Park, his hometown. "The kids loved him for his enthusiasm and gregariousness," said a friend, Jay Baggett of Newnan.
For years after he became a counselor, students still called him "Coach Vaughn," said a former student, Bob Johnston of Fayetteville.
Mr. Vaughn took the lead in another favorite pursuit --- barbershop singing.
"John had a mellow lead voice that blended perfectly in our quartet. That's very important in maintaining harmonic balance," said Len Parker of Peachtree City, who sang with him.
Their Harmony Brothers quartet is one of several ensembles that are part of the Southland Barbershop Chorus, a 25-member group that performs throughout the year in south metro Atlanta.
"Once when John arrived to sing for a couple's 50th wedding anniversary party, he discovered the husband was someone he had taught with years ago and the man's children had been his students. It was like a family reunion," said a friend, Thornton Cutler of Peachtree City.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Roberts of Atlanta; three sons, Larry Vaughn of Fayetteville, David Vaughn of Grenoble, France, and Tom Vaughn of Seattle; four sisters, Betty Davenport of Covington, Marj Butterworth of Canton, Diane Williamson of Moreland and Cheryl Hudson of Peachtree City; a brother, Ronnie Vaughn of Carrollton; and nine grandchildren.

Jack Gordon Hanson
Humility, self-discipline, honor, unpretentiousness, patience and a sense of justice and love are characteristics describing “Coach” Jack G. Hanson, who passed away on January 6, 2015 after lengthy illnesses.
He was born February 23, 1927 in Roanoke, AL, the son of Dr. Douglas and Mrs. Annie Gooden Hanson.
After graduating from Handley High School in Roanoke, Jack joined the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his discharge, Jack received a football scholarship to Georgia Tech, but after injuring his shoulder, he became a student of the University of Alabama and graduated. Then began his football and basketball career coaching at (Old) Campbell High School, M.D. Collins High School, and Riverdale Middle School. Coach Hanson graduated from the University of Georgia in 1973 with an M.Ed.
He loved coaching because he was able to influence teenagers in their lives, sometimes serving as surrogate Dad. During training his commands were “do your bear crawls and run laps”. His students respected and loved him and have many stories about life with Coach Hanson. He received many awards for coaching, i.e. Coach of the year in 1953 and 1954 from Georgia Athletic Coaches Association and Clayton County Champions in 1951-1952.
Coach Hanson was a rich man – not in money, but in his friends, students, and relatives who loved him. He coached football and basketball at Riverdale Middle School for $100 a month and all the change in the drink machine. He loved the kids and his life was an example for them to follow.
Jack’s private life was a blessing, as he married Beverly Hitchcock Cogbill in 1976. They were married almost 40 years, and their lives were filled with love and laughter. They lived in Peachtree City for 26 years.
